The Canadian government provides many benefits for the welfare of its citizens. One such benefit is GST/ HST benefits for citizens provided quarterly by the government to individuals and families with low or moderate income in covering their paid GST/ HST.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides tax-free quarterly payments to eligible citizens and it may also integrate payments from territorial and provincial benefits and credit benefits.

All the eligible citizens for the GST credit program can mark their calendars with the 2024 GST Payments dates for managing their finances well. The quarterly schedule for the GST credits is below:

Eligibility of the GST Credit Program

Taxpayers who filed their personal income tax and benefit return are automatically eligible for the Goods and Services Tax/ Harmonized Sales Tax credits. 

The eligibility criteria for the GST/ HST credits decided by the government are as follows:

  • You must be a Canadian resident at the beginning of the month in which CRA makes the quarterly payment.
  • You must attain an age of 19 years or older.
  • You have (or had) a spouse or a common-law partner.
  • You have (or had) a child and live (or lived) with your child.

How much GST credit can you expect this year?

The GST credits depend on the following factors:

  • Your net family income if you have a spouse or common-law partner, or individual income if you are single.
  • Your under-19-year-old children number that you have registered for the GST/ HST credits.

The eligible individual or family can expect the following GST/ HST Payments based on the 2022 base year:

Remember, your GST credits would need to be recalculated if:

  • There’s a change in your income or your family’s income.
  • Your marital status has been changed.
  • Change in your number of children.
  • Your eligible children have passed the age of 19 years.
  • You have started or stopped the custody of a child.
  • When a recipient dies.

How to apply for the GST Credit?

The taxpayers who have filed personal income tax returns or benefit returns will automatically receive the GST credits in their accounts.

If you are a new resident, then follow the below steps to apply for the GST credit:

  • Go to the official website of CRA https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/child-family-benefits/gsthstc-apply.html
  • If you have children, fill out Form RC66 to apply for the Child and Family benefits which includes GST credits.
  • If you don’t have any children, fill out the Form RC151.
  • Mail the form to your nearest tax center.
