Montana Property Tax Rebate, Eligibility Criteria, Amount, How to apply?

The Montana Department of Revenue has published a notice for the property tax rebates’ second round distribution, the eligible Montana can apply for the rebate till 01 October 2024. Montana taxpayers looking for property tax relief can check out this rebate and its claiming process to recover their property taxes.

Montana Property Tax Rebate

In 2022, Governor Greg brought the idea of property tax relief for Montanans to offset their property taxes for the principal residence, which became law in March 2023. The property tax relief includes a rebate for eligible Montana taxpayers for their principal residence subject to Montana State tax.

 The property tax rebate is aimed to reduce the financial burden of taxpayers with a primary residence and encourage people to buy their own homes.  Under the property tax relief, the rebate on primary residence applies for tax years 2023 and 2024.  So doing their bit, the DOR has released the notice regarding the second round of property tax rebates.

The Montana taxpayers who wish to take advantage of the rebate must apply for the rebate, the application process has begun from 15 August 2024, and the taxpayers still have time to apply for the rebate as the last date to apply is 01 October 2024.

According to reports, last year the Montanans received the biggest property tax relief in the history of the Montana state and taxpayers saved $120 million through the rebate. Now, with the second round of rebate disbursement, the government is determined to lower the financial burden of the property taxpayers.

Who qualifies to receive the Montana Property Tax Rebate?

The Montanas who meet the following eligibility requirements qualify for the property tax rebate applications and can apply for the rebate:

  • You must be a Montana taxpayer who paid property taxes for your principal residence.
  • You own an eligible residence, such as:
  • Apartments
  • Trailers
  • Single-family house
  • Condominiums
  • Mobile homes surround one acre of land
  • Manufactured home
  • You have a Montana residence in 2023 for at least seven months
  • You live in Montana for a minimum of seven months in the year 2023
  • You were billed for property taxes, including other fees and special assessments for your residence.
  • If by any chance you change your principal residence, you can qualify for the rebate when you have paid the taxes while residing in each principal residence for a minimum of seven months during the claim year.

Montana Property Tax Rebate Amount

The Montana taxpayers who meet the eligibility requirements of property tax rebate under the property tax relief will receive a $675 rebate or an amount equal to the property taxes you paid on principal residence for tax years 2023.

The taxpayers will receive the rebate via paper checks as direct deposit is not available. The online claimants will receive the applicable rebate payment within 30 days of their claim. However, people with paper claims will have to wait for 90 days to process and then an additional 4 weeks for the delivery of the paper check.

According to the rules of Montana Property tax relief, only one rebate is permitted for one household, so only the homeowners can apply for the refund.  However, if the homeowner dies, the representative of the estate can apply for the property tax rebate on behalf of the deceased individual who qualifies for the property tax rebate.

What do you need to claim the Montana Property Tax Rebate? 

The Montanans who meet the tax relief conditions and wish to receive the second round of property tax rebate should apply for the rebate before the last date 01 October 2024. But when you move to the application process for the Montana property tax rebate, you should be aware of the following supporting documents you would need to make your claim:

  • Your principal residence Geocode (17-digit code to identify your property) in 2023, you can find the Geocode on Montana Cadastral.
  • Amount of paid property tax on principal residence in tax year 2023, you can find this in your principal residence property tax bill.
  • Your Social Security Number, your spouse’s SSN, and your dependent’s SSN. If you are claiming a property tax rebate on behalf of deceased taxpayers, then you will need his SSN.
  • Your mailing address where you wish to receive the property tax rebate check, the claimants should enter the correct details to receive the tax rebate timely.

How to claim the Montana Property Tax Rebate?

The Montanans who are certain of their eligibility for the property tax rebate can claim the rebate in the following ways:

  • Online: Montana taxpayers should apply online for faster rebate payments. The taxpayers who wish to apply online should visit the official site, https://mtrevenue.gov/taxes/property-tax-rebate-house-bill-222/, and click the Apply for Property tax rebate option. Here, enter your SSN and Geocode and complete the application process within a few minutes.
  • Offline: People who can’t apply online can submit the paper form (MPTR23) for the property tax rebate available on the official website and submit/post the form to the authority or call 406 44 6900 for assistance.

The Montanans should submit their claim for the Property tax rebate before the last date 01 October 2024 to receive the tax relief on their paid property taxes. According to reports, 10,000 rebate applications were filed after the opening of the application window for the property tax rebate, so the homeowners who still haven’t applied should hurry and apply online to claim their rebate.

The Montana Governor has established a bipartisan property tax task force to look for policies that could reduce the burden on homeowners and offer long-term property tax relief to the homeowners with this short-term relief.
