Montana Property Tax Rebate Payout Date

The Montana taxpayers who have paid property taxes on their principal home receive rebates on the taxes from the Montana Department of Revenue (DOR). The property tax relief was turned into law by Governor Greg Gianforte in 2023 seeing the property tax in Montana is too high. 

The government intends to provide some financial relief to the taxpayers through property tax rebates. In August 2024, the DOR invited applications from eligible Montana taxpayers for the second round of property tax rebate distribution for the tax year 2023 between 15 Aug 2024 and 01 Oct 2024.

According to the notice, once the DOR processes your property tax rebate claims, it may take around 30 days for the authority to issue your rebate and paper claims can take 90 days to process.

How do you track your Montana Property Tax Rebate?

The Montanans who have applied for the second round of property tax rebate can track their property tax rebate through the “Where is my rebate?” tool on the DOR TransAction Portal. 

The Montanans will need the following information in hand to track their tax rebate on the portal:

  • Social Security Number (if you are claiming for the deceased, enter their SSN)
  • Your 17-digit Geocode to identify your property.

The Montana taxpayers can follow the below steps to track their property tax rebate:

  • First, you should visit the official website of Montana DOR at https://mtrevenue.gov/
  • Next, click on Apply for the 2024 Property Tax rebate section on the homepage.
  • Next, you will find the “Where is my Rebate?” option on the next page beside the Apply for the property tax rebate button.  
  • Next, click it and you will be directed to the TransAction portal. 
  • Now, enter your SSN on the required column, and your 17-digit Geocode. If some people have a 15-digit geocode they should add their two-digit country code to their Geocode. 
  • Next, tick the declaration of claiming the property tax rebate and click the Validate Rebate option to see the status of your property tax rebate. 
  • You can check the tax rebate status, whether it is processed or approved, and the amount you will receive via tax rebate.

How much will you receive through the Montana Property Tax Rebate?

The Montana taxpayers who meet the eligibility criteria of the Montana Property tax rebate and apply within the applicable time frame will receive a refund of up to $675 or an amount they paid under the 2023 property tax. The taxpayers would understand that the rebate amount will never exceed the amount of taxes they paid on their principal residence and $675. 

For instance, the taxpayers paid $525 in taxes for the tax year 2023, so they will receive $525 under the property tax rebate, and if the taxpayers paid $1000 for the property tax, they will only receive $675 through the property tax rebate. 

The Montana household can claim only one property tax rebate for their eligible residence. The taxes paid up to one acre of principal residence land can be used to claim the rebate, the taxpayers can use the calculator available on the official website to calculate their taxes on their property. 

How to claim the Montana Property Tax rebate?

The Montana homeowners who have paid the property tax on their principal residence and lived in the residence for a minimum of seven months in 2023 and still haven’t applied for the property tax rebate should follow the below steps to complete their claiming process online:

  • You should visit the official website of the Montana DOR mentioned above. 
  • Next, click the Apply for the Montana Property tax rebate 2024 option and click Apply for rebates on the next page. 
  • Now, enter your SSN and 17-digit Geocode, and tick the declaration on the next page. 
  • Next, click the continue tab and complete the application process for the Montana property tax rebate by moving to the next page by entering the amount of property tax you paid in 2023 and other essential information.

The applicants who can’t apply online can download the MPTR23 rebate form on the official website or from the nearby revenue office and send their filled form to the authority, but the taxpayers are advised to fill the form online as only 10-14 days are left for the application. 

What to do if your Property tax rebate is denied?

The Montana taxpayers who have applied for the property tax rebate and find their application is denied by the authority can file for review of his/her application. The taxpayers who are not satisfied with the authority’s decision on their 2024 property tax rebate application can use form APLS101F or go to the TransAction portal. 

The informal appeal for reviewing your property tax rebate application within 45 days of the notice. The authority will review your appeal and respond to the appeal result within 45 days with appropriate reasons.
