Home Battery Rebate, which is intended to make the installation of solar batteries for more energy efficiency and a reduction in emissions, less of a hassle on households, shall be implemented by the NSW Government in November 2024 as part of the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme.
NSW Battery Rebate 2024
The New South Wales government has unveiled a new battery rebate scheme, pushing up the adoption of solar batteries for household and business premises. The aim is for people to lower upfront costs, so most can begin to store their excess solar energy for later use.
The rebate forms part of a larger program, Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, which will benefit grid stability and is also serving as a roadmap for easing the reliance on the generation options that are fossil fuel-based.
The amount of rebate differs according to the size of the battery; you can get a discount of $1,600 to $2,400 on the upfront installation cost. Besides a rebate against the battery, you can claim an incentive of $250 to $400 for connecting it to a Virtual Power Plant.

Eligibility Criteria for the NSW Battery Rebate 2024
To avail the NSW Battery Rebate, the following eligibility criteria must be met:
Requirements for Property
- There must be a pre-installed solar PV system at the premises.
- The location of the property should be within the state of New South Wales.
Battery System
- The capacity of the battery system should be in the range from 2kWh to 28kWh.
- Warranty: The battery should have at least a 10-year-long warranty, giving an assurance of up to 70% usable capacity after the 10th year.
- Performance Standards: The battery should meet the specific performance standards as set out by the NSW government.
- Installation: The battery must be installed by an accredited supplier.
Participant Requirements
- Ownership: You should own the property where the battery is installed.
- Residential or Commercial Property: The property can be either a townhouse or a commercial building.
- VPP Participation: The battery you purchase needs to be part of the Virtual Power Plant to receive the full rebate.
- Proof of Ownership: You will need to provide proof of ownership for the property and solar system.
- System Age: There will be some conditions regarding how old your existing solar system is.
NSW Battery Rebate Amount Details
The NSW Battery Rebate offers dollar incentives to homeowners and businesses to drive the early payback options for solar batteries.
The baseline for the rebate will be tiered based on the battery size outlined below:
- Battery Capacity: The quantified size, in kilowatt-hours, of the battery.
- Rebate Amount: A rebate of $1,600 to $2,400 can be earned by homeowners. The range in the rebate is dependent on the size and other characteristics of the battery.
In addition to the baseline rebate, both homeowners and businesses can earn extra incentive if they opt to have their battery be a part of a VPP:
- VPP Participation: A VPP allows the battery to interconnect and participate, specifically during grid peak demand periods.
- Incentive Amount: It also gives customers an extra allowance of $250 to $400 over and above the base rebate for allowing the battery to interconnect with a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
It is the sum of the base rebate and the VPP incentive.
- The maximum number of times that the VPP incentive can be claimed over the lifetime of the battery is two, and at least three years must separate each claim.
The government of NSW may infuse additional incentives related to the criteria for rebates or others, such as:
- Income-Based Rebates that target low-income households.
- Regional-based rebates that provide higher incentives for particular areas.
- Battery technology incentives that are designed for specific technologies.
How to apply for the NSW Battery Rebate Programme
The NSW Battery Rebate programme will open on 1 November 2024. Like other government rebate programmes, it is likely to work in the following manner:
- The NSW government is going to develop a plain and simple online portal for the very purpose of the rebate programme.
- Most probably you will need first to register with them online before allowing you to download the form
- You are required to provide information regarding the property the address and ownership of the property
- You will also be required to give information on your current solar, with its capacity and installation date.
- You will have to state the details of the battery system you are about to install, including the capacity and make of the battery and semi-technical details about the device installer.
- You should attach any documents that you feel may be necessary for further clarification, like proof of ownership and installation of the property, where the system will be installed.
- Go through all the enter details and carry out the needed edits; at this point, you can send the application.
